“I am honored to be selected to lead Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic,” the 71-year-old Torre said. “I have been fortunate to have many different experiences throughout my career, but being a part of Team USA will be a first, and I am very excited about it. I look forward to the challenge of representing the United States when this tournament celebrates the global growth of our national pastime next year.”
Torre last managed in 2010 with the Dodgers and is now the executive vice president of baseball operations for MLB. The Brooklyn native won four World Series titles with the Yankees from 1996 to 2007.Next year will be the third World Baseball Classic. Japan won the first two installments. Team USA came in fourth in 2009.
