Former Army star J.T. Watkins helped Lowell hand Hudson Valley its third straight loss in a New York-Penn League game before 5,116 fans at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill.
First-place Hudson Valley (35-19), one game up in the McNamara Division, was swept at home for the first time all season.
The Renegades tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning on catcher Jake DePew’s RBI single. But Lowell (26-28) took the lead for good in the fifth after Watkins, who helped Army win the Patriot League tournament title and earn an NCAA tourney berth this spring, laid down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Lowell scored twice in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Hudson Valley cut its deficit to 3-2 with a run in the sixth. But Watkins walked to lead off the eighth and scored on Dreily Guerrero’s two-run double.
Six Hudson Valley players will represent the American League in the all-star game on Tuesday in Niles, Ohio.
Hudson Valley next plays Wednesday at Connecticut.
