Mets claim Kelly Shoppach off waivers from Red Sox

The Mets announced they have claimed C Kelly Shoppach off waivers from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

Shoppach, 32, hit .250 with a .327 OBP, five home runs and 17 RBI in 48 games with the Red Sox this season.

Shoppach has hit .227 with 64 home runs and 197 RBI in 508 career games with Boston, Cleveland and Tampa Bay.

In July, Peter Gammons of MLB.com said the Mets have considered acquiring Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox.

Shoppach signed a one-year, $1.35 million contract with the Red Sox this past winter – he can become a free agent after the season. The Mets start todays action 9 games back of Pirates in Wild card race they would probably option Rob Johnson back to  Buffalo to make room for Shoppach.
