FORT MILL, S.C.
Charlotte’s Hector Santiago and Matt Zaleski combined on a six-hit shutout Monday night to beat Norfolk 6-0 and push the Knights closer to the International League South division title.
The loss dropped the second-place Tides nine games out of first with 20 to play. Charlotte’s magic number for clinching the division is 12.
Santiago allowed four hits in 6 ⅔ innings and Zaleski allowed two in 2⅓. Each struck out five.
Dan Johnson’s 27th home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, gave the Knights the only runs they needed.
Tides lefty Zach Britton took the loss, allowing six runs and three hits in 3⅔ innings. He struck out seven, but walked four.
Notes: Tides shortstop Blake Davis was named the IL’s Batter of the Week. He hit .656 (13 for 23)…. The Baltimore Orioles traded Tides infielder Carlos Rojas to Cleveland for left-hander J.C. Romero. Rojas batted .226 in 39 games with the Tides. Romero spent part of the season in Norfolk, going 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in 17 appearances. He opted out of his contract and was signed by the Indians to a minor-league deal July 21. Romero will be added to Baltimore’s 25-man roster.
